There are more Chinese students studying in the United States than ever before.
The number of Chinese students at U.S. private high schools increased more than 100 times to 6,725 in 2010-11 from 65 in 2005-06 (source: U.S. Department of Homeland Security). China is now the #1 source of international students at boarding schools (formerly it was Korea).
But how do these Chinese students and their parents decide where to study? Apparently, they do not always have access to good information in China. Therefore, they can be lead to apply to places that are a) inappropriate for them and b) very expensive.
